The Gift Shoppe at Perkins
When the present location of Perkins Drugs was built in 1964 there was a small 8 foot wall space in the front of the store devoted to gifts. These gifts were mostly things that ladies would give as bridge prizes; bridge was big among ladies clubs at that time. As things progressed there were more gift items added.
Sometime in early 1970 the property next to the store belonging to E.M. Stack was bought and the new gift shop was added to the original building. It seemed like a cavernous addition at the time as there was not enough inventory to fill the new space, though time would eventually take care of that situation.
In early 1978 Tommy and Anna Lou Perkins visited friends in Atlanta Georgia and went to a gift shop that was having a Christmas Open House. They came back and planted the idea that Perkins should start such an event. The Gift Shoppe at Perkins Drugs was the first in Gallatin to hold a Christmas Open House. This started a tradition that other business began as well. Perkins Drugs Christmas Open House continues each year on the second weekend of November. Each year people from all over middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky attend. Many say it is their way of kicking off the holiday season and an opportunity to see new and wonderful trends in Christmas decor. There are 6 to 7 themed trees, dozens of custom made wreaths and arrangements, collector items such as Christopher Radko® ornaments, Byers' Choice®, and Willow tree™; it is Christmas decor galore.
The Gift Shoppe at Perkins Drugs also has a full service bridal registry. It has become a popular place for brides to register gifts for their wedding.
There is also a baby registry for those expectant parents to register gifts for the new additions to their family.
